Wyoming Declares Open Season
on Yellowstone Wolves

By Donna Bettinger

When Lewis and Clark passed through the region nearly 200 years ago,
wolves played an essential role in Greater Yellowstone, assuring
ecological balance between predator and prey. Seventy years ago,
however, the last wolf was exterminated in the lower-48, creating an
imbalance in that natural process. Since their reintroduction in 1995,
wolves have increased from 14 to nearly 300 animals.

Accordingly, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service may consider delisting,
or removing the wolf from protections of the Endangered Species Act,
thereby turning over management outside national parks to individual
states.

A prerequisite for delisting is that each state has an approved wolf
management plan in place prior to delisting. Currently, Idaho has
completed its plan, and the Montana plan is in draft form.

Unfortunately, the state of Wyoming has recently proposed a management
scheme that will result in an open season on wolves outside Parks and
Wilderness lands in Wyoming once they are delisted.

Please tell the Fish and Wildlife Service to reject Wyoming's request
for 'dual classification' of wolves.
